South Korea: Teletech Unveils New Cell Phone for Satellite TV Service Text of report by South Korean news agency Yonhap
Seoul, 14 April: South Korea Teletech Co., a handset-making unit of SK Telecom Co., said Thursday [14 April] it will begin selling a new cell phone capable of receiving satellite-based digital television broadcast signals within this month.
The IMB-1000 phone, which blends a 260,000-colour touch screen and 2-megapixel camera, is expected to allow users to watch high- definition digital TV programming by satellite, SK Teletech said in a statement.
The device is also equipped with a 2.4-inch screen with higher resolution and high-speed internet capability.
The price is set at about 700,000 won (692 US dollars) before subsidies from an operator.
After several months of trial operation, TU Media Corp., another unit of SK Telecom, is scheduled to launch a commercial service of the satellite mobile TV programing from 1 May.
Satellite-based digital TV on mobile phones is one of the innovative plans SK Telecom is experimenting with to find a new growth engine.
Faced with market saturation in South Korea, Asia's third- largest wireless market, SK Telecom is struggling with slow growth in sales and profits.
It controls more than half of South Korea's 37 million mobile phone customers with 19 million subscribers.
TU Media will provide seven video and 12 audio channels, far short of its initial target of 14 video and 24 audio channels.
The new service requires consumers to buy handsets equipped with the antenna and chips needed to receive the satellite signals.
In March 2004, SK Telecom and Japan's Toshiba Corp. launched the world's first satellite for the mobile TV service to cell phones.
The service is also in its early stage of commercial operation by Mobile Broadcasting Corp., a unit of Toshiba.
